Each time I read this, I am a child again....

I would have to say my very favorite piece of children's literature would have to be The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg.  When I was a little girl, our school librarian expressed her love for Chris Van Allsburg.  She hung posters of his book covers around the library. Of course, she read all of his books to us and I enjoyed each one.  However, I will never forget the first time I heard this story.  I was transfixed. From the "hot chocolate as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars" (VanAllsburg, 1985), the dreamy and delicate chalk-pastel illustrations, to the first gift of Christmas presented to the little boy.  I can still remember the ache in my heart when his gift was lost through the hole in his pocket.
I have loved many books through the years, but none have touched my heart as this book has.

  1. I have never read this book before. It sounds very interesting. What was the main point of the story? When reading your post it makes me want to hear more about it. It really sounds like something my son, Isaiah would love to read. He is seven years old and he loves to read and write little books. He loves Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! This sounds something like it.

  2. It's the story of a boy who wakes up on Christmas Eve to discover that there is a magical train waiting to take him to the North Pole. It delves into believing in something with your whole heart. I think your son would love it! I don't want to give too much away! :)

  3. I love Polar Express. Every year in my classroom, I plan a whole day in December around the book. I'm still working on being allowed to have the kids where pajamas. I make hot chocolate and bring in the little munchins from Dunkin' Donuts. The kids love it!

  4. Hi Rachel,
I can sense your passion for The Polar Express as I read your descriptive summary. I am sure you pass that feeling along to Emilee and other young children that you have read it to just as that librarian did for you.

  5. I also love the Polar Express. Every year at school we let the children wear their pajamas and watch that movie while we serve them hot chocolate.
